Mrs Brown’s Boys

Mrs Brown’s Boys is an Irish TV-comedy which has become one of my favourites. Before my Dublin time, I hadn’t heard anything about that but somehow it was one of the first things that I got to see and started to like a lot.

This is a story of a very Irish family, where Mrs Brown, played by a male actor Brendan O’Carroll who has also created the whole story, is a mother of 4 grown up sons and one daughter who are living in Dublin. All the characters in this show are so funny and real and talking with such a cute Dublin accent so that sometimes it’s a bit difficult for me to get all the jokes. But I must say that I have done pretty well and if I don’t get something at once, I will just ask. For me, it’s a real insight into the life of a real Irish family with all this humour, sincerity and strength that the people have got here. And I have always admired the art of making fun of yourself, it shows that the person gets on well with his or her own inner self and is happy and full of life.

A year ago, just at Christmas time, I saw the movie – D’Movie – which was on TV for the first time and in which Agnes Brown had to fight over the right of having her stall at Moore street in Dublin. I don’t care if some people say that it’s not funny, I just liked it, and especially how the actors enjoyed making that movie. And I also liked to recognize the places in the heart of Dublin.

“Mrs Brown’s Boys” is quite a Family project because of Agnes Brown, of course, Brendan O’Carroll is actually the husband of his daughter Cathy, and not the mother but the father of his son Buster in a real life. Besides that, there are two more of his grandchildren and also his sister having roles in this show.

In Estonia, we have had something quite similar and as popular as “Mrs Brown’s Boys”, which was also a TV-show, where male actors played the female parts, actually the male parts as well. It was about two middle-aged old-school couples, who were trying to get used to the life in the new Estonian Republic. After being one of the most popular TV-shows for years, it was also made into a movie. Unfortunately, the movie was not so funny any more, or we had just got tired of Maie and Valdur, these were the names of the main characters.

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Perculiar Children

As we both love Fantasy books and movies and the movie of Miss Peregrine and her Peculiar Children had just come to the cinemas in Dublin and so we went to see it. I was the only one who had read the first 2 books the big and the Little Seans had just seen the trailers but we all liked it. Little Sean was a bit confused about the time travelling storyline because he didn’t expect it by watching the trailers. Big Sean had probably listened to my thoughts about the books and now got excited to read them too.

The Legend of Tarzan

This time, we  visited the Cineworld cinema in Parnell Street. This cinema is much newer than the Savoy and has 14 different showing rooms.

Probably till now I was the only one left who  had no experiences with 3D movies, but now I have done it. Somehow I have missed it, maybe because we don’t have the 3D cinema in Haapsalu and maybe because I am so used to watch all my movies online, so I must say that even haven’t thought about it. But as this opportunity came, of course, I took it and it was quite interesting. Maybe we were sitting too close to the screen, because sometimes, especially when there were people only, taken very close, it bothered me, but it was quite different with the big nature scenes and so I think it was the right movie to try it. Ok, I am not such a big fan of Tarzan, but somehow this story captured me when I was a child. I think that was my granny who told me about it because we didn’t have that book, or if there was one, it was published during the times of the first Estonian Republic, and that made it much more exciting. Later, of course, I saw the movie with Johnny Weismüller on Finnish TV and read some kind of a book as well. But the thing that I most remember about Tarzan was one old song about the jungle and animals and Tarzan who is guarding over the sleeping jungle and his little son 🙂

Absolutely Fabulous

This year I have a long list of movies which are coming out and which I want to see and “Absolutely Fabulous” was on my list as I have been quite a big fan of Jennifer Saunders (and Dawn French who was a co-producer of that movie). I also had the Savoy Cinema on my list because it’s so near to our home and I still had not had a chance to visit it. As it was playing in Savoy, we went to see the movie and it was funny and as fabulous as the serials had been, still of course not competing with “Vicar of Dibley“, which is my favourite British serial. They could have made a movie out of that as well, I would have been really thankful and the first one to go to see it. Now, of course, it’s too late, because Roger Lloyd Pack, who played Owen, unfortunately, passed away in 2014.

Game of the Thrones

We both are the great fans of “Game of the Thrones” and that’s why we kept ourselves from watching the 6th season because we wanted to watch it together. I was the one who started to read the books first and then, of course, I recommended them and as we both like fantasy books they soon became our favourites. After reading all the five books we started to watch the series too and in spite of some differences between the books and the movies, we still love both of them.

As George Martin couldn’t release the 6th book before the movie, we were really curious to see the 6th season because we didn’t have a clue what was going on. Ok, I have to confess that I knew about Jon Snow and unfortunately I also knew about poor Hodor, but it was really hard to not notice it all in social media, especially that I have trafficked it all to my Facebook 😀

And after all that waiting and torturing ourselves we did all these 10 parts of the 6th season with 3 evenings. Wow, I have to say that this was the best season ever and now we cannot wait the 7th coming out. The good thing is that now I can start to read again all these articles with spoilers for the 6th season and the predictions for the next part which I had to avoid for some months because I didn’t want to spoil the whole fun of watching it in Dublin together. Here are some of the best actors of “Game of the Thrones“.

Here are the Top 7 Game of Thrones Season 7 Predictions, so let’s wait and see 🙂

The Force Awakens

Maybe I was the last one on the Earth who hadn’t seen Star Wars, but now I’m not any more 🙂 As the new Star Wars came out and everyone was os excited about that, I also started to be excited and as much as I thought I really felt that I have a big blank in my education. So, to get me started, we did a Star Wars marathon, three movies altogether, that was my limit for one day. All the other details I got by asking questions and listening to reciting the story. After all these preparations, I felt really ready to go to the cinema to watch the new Star Wars movie and I have to say that I liked it a lot. And to be honest, I had seen one of them somewhere in the past, but I just didn’t remember anything about it. I was just thinking that these are not my type of movies, and somehow I was right too, but in some strange way, I enjoyed them, like I seem to enjoy most of the fantasy things – books and movies.

Ballykissanger – the opening scene

Father Peter Clifford’s journey from England ends in his new parish, the small Irish town of Ballykissangel. It’s a change from his previous job in the centre of Manchester, but this rural Irish community is hardly the sleepy village he expected…

The village of Avoca in County Wicklow was the film set for Ballykissangel. Stephen Tompkinson as Father Peter Clifford captured my heart at once and I will pretty sure try to watch all these 6 seasons. Maybe I will find them in Dublin 🙂
